Shortcuts to RM50,000

Most of the time when I hear a song, I'd go like "Oh I know this song! I've heard it before.... But umm I don't know who sang it and what's the title of the song".

I suck at identifying song titles and sometimes, the artistes.

Yeap, not even the ever-so-"fofuler" Justin Bieber's Baby song. But now I know la, after asking about it on Twitter some time ago. And I actually *ehem* like the song - Glee's version! ;p

But if you're nothing like me; if you listen to a lot of music and you know them, then you might wanna participate in JD & Dilly's ShortCuts to RM50,000 contest on MIX Breakfast Show!

Basically, JD and Dilly will play a montage of 4 song snippets and you need to identify the song titles and artistes correctly in the correct sequence and if you can do that within 10 seconds, you'll get RM1000 cash! Awesome, no? But even if you can't, you'd still get RM100 for every correct artist and song title.

You know, sometimes I just google a part of the lyrics of the song that I like to find the song title. Maybe you can do that too, except you have to be very quiet so that the DJs can't hear you typing away on your computer and of course you have to be a super duper fast typer because it's only within 10 seconds. Good luck with that.

Or you know, if you don't wanna participate in the contest because you suck at identifying songs like I do and you're not a super duper fast typer, you could just listen to MIX fm Breakfast Show on your way to work, especially if you're stuck in traffic jam and you've got nothing fun to do.

Some of the "menus" on MIX Breakfast Show:

JD's Classifieds
A segment where JD picks a job in the classifieds section of the new paper, calls them up to hassle them for a job with his "special" requirements which includes less work more pay, more benefits and less work stress. Happens every weekday at 7.15am and repeats at 6.30am.

Dilly's Daily Dilemma
This is a segment by Dilly where she plays Aunt Agony trying to solve people's everyday dilemma and problems with the help of our callers and professional help. Happens every week day at 7.30am and repeats at 6.15am.

Battle of The Sexes
The battle between the female and male species to determine which species is the smarter gender. Both genders will be given a series of gender based questions to answer (girls to get guy based questions and guys get girl based questions). The losing gender will have their team captains, in this case, JD for the Guys and Dilly for the Girls, being punished at the month.

Brain Freeze
You will be given a daily riddle and you have to work out the answer within half an hour. See if you can get it!

Like A Version
The old and the new - take a look back at an older version of a song which is covered or sampled in today's new music. Great way to test your musical knowledge too.

You can even listen to MIX fm on your computer.
Just log on to www.mix.fm and click on the Listen Now! button at the top of the page.

My Connected Tot

You know, there's a new way of saying "smart kid".
It's CONNECTED TOT.

"Wow, your kid is so connected!". Hehe.

Well you see, all of us are born with 100 BILLION brain cells but not all are connected. For learning to happen, the brain cells need to connect with one another first so the more brain cells connect, the faster the learning happens. So if a child is able to apply what he/she has observed and learned into everyday life, he/she is called a Connected Tot. Connected tots are the little ones who build a pool of knowledge by forming connections with the things around them. Like the little girl in this video (my goodness, she's so adorable!).

The video is pretty interesting as there's a few different endings based on the item you clicked on. Cuba try test! ;D

I'm sure you mommies have experienced the "Connected Tot" moments with your child too, right? I have, lots of time. The most recent one was when Ayra was not feeling well. She had cold and sore throat so when she sneezed or coughed, I applied this Children's Vapor Balm (kind of like Vicks) on her chest and back to make her feel better. She likes it!

Cantik tak dinding rumah saya? Hasil "kerja" Ayra la tu!

A few days later, Raina pulak berjangkit selsema dan batuk dari kakak dia. When Ayra first heard her sister coughed, she quickly took the vapor balm and to my surprise, tried to apply it on Raina's chest just the way I did to her. I was amazed!

Doctor Ayra

Her brain cells are making connections and she applied what she had observed earlier: kalau selsema atau batuk, sapu vapor balm. She's a connected tot!

Kids never fail to amuse and amaze us, do they? Everyday is a surprise; there's always something new that they would "show" us. It's definitely one of the best things about being a parent! :)

Nikon Coolpix S1100pj Camera Review

The other day when I was at my parents' house, Ayra took my iPhone and started playing with the flashcard app. My mom saw it and said, "Pandainya. Mama dulu nak ajar korang, buat flashcard sendiri. Sekarang tak payah, semua dah canggih".

Yeah everything is so canggih nowadays, huh!

I have to admit, iPhone and iPad are the greatest learning tools for Ayra, besides educational VCDs and books. But that's not all. I just discovered another gadget that I can use to teach my kid.

A camera!

I was given this Nikon Coolpix S1100pj in violet. The camera comes in three other colors as well - black, silver and green.

To be honest, I had never seen a camera like this before. The Nikon Coolpix S1100pj is not like any regular compact camera because it has a built-in projector, which by the way, can make a cool flashcard for my kid (more on that later). It also comes with a remote control!

It's like the world's cutest remote control, doncha think?

Besides for the projector, you can use the remote control to take pictures as well. You know how cumbersome it can be when taking self-portraits or using a self-timer, right? That's when you use this remote control. No need to lari lintang-pukang anymore when you set the timer on for a group photo or anything. Just point the remote control's infrared emitter at the camera and press the button when you're all ready. How cool is that?!

I've been spending the past few days testing out this camera and taking TONS of photos. The first thing I snapped is my object of affection: my kids of course!

This camera has a touchscreen LCD.

With flash

Without flash
(Raina was wriggling herself so her image is a bit blurry)

There are 17 scene modes which are Portrait, Landscape, Sports, Night portrait, Party/indoor, Beach, Snow, Sunset, Dusk/dawn, Night landscape, Close-up, Food, Museum, Fireworks show, Copy, Backlighting and Panorama assist. Here are some photos that I tested out using the different scene modes:

Portrait mode
(who said I have flawless skin? Got bintik-bintik and chicken pox scars la on my forehead)

Food mode

Night landscape mode

Copy mode

I think the photos are not bad for a point-and-shoot camera.

Now here comes my favorite part - the filter effects! You can apply a variety of effects on your captured photos using the digital filter such as Color options, Soft, Selective color, Cross screen, Fisheye or Miniature effect.

The Soft effect gives the picture a soft look by blurring the area surrounding the point that you tap and makes it as the main focus. So nice!

Then there's Fisheye effect, which makes the picture looks like it's taken using fisheye lens.

Ok that's creepy.

My absolute favorite effect is the Cross screen! It produces starry rays of light that radiate outward from bright or shiny objects. It makes your pictures look so sparkly, like bling-bling. Love it!

Sparkly baby ballet flats

Sparkly Anya Hindmarch logo

Sparkly necklace

Sparkly ring

And sparkly heel.
My shoe looked like it's made of diamonds!!

Ok enough of bling-bling already.

There's also Glamour Retouch which can be used to soften the skin tone of faces detected in the picture and it makes the faces look smaller with bigger eyes, like it's been photoshopped! You can doodle and decorate your pictures as well with butterflies, rainbows, hearts, stars, add a frame, insert a date stamp and add a voice memo.

Of course the highlight of this camera is the projector. The built-in projector projects pictures and movies onto any flat surfaces, making it a cool way to share pictures and HD movies with your friends and family.

With your own creativity, you can use the projector for lots of fun things. Check out this video how the projector is used to distract a crying baby, call a waitress at a restaurant for a refill and a cute way to propose to a girl!

You may be wondering how I use the projector as a flashcard for my kid.
Well, here's a short video I made to show to you guys.

Pretty cool, huh? ;D
If you like unique features in your digital camera, then you might like this Nikon Coolpix S1100pj!

Security Blanket

My husband bought this book a few months after we got married and paksa me to read it.

It's a pretty good book (although I haven't finished reading it yet). This book tells how husband and wife should work together as a team to manage their money based on 9 steps, and one of the steps, which is Step 6 is "Build Your Security Blanket".

Uh-huh, insurance!

Some people take insurance for granted and think it's just an unnecessary expense. Well I was one of that people. It never occurred to me just how important it is to have insurance until I read that book. Having an insurance policy is very crucial because nobody knows when they will fall sick.

I remembered a story by my mom about how her classmate during her uni years died because of a pimple. This is a true story, I'm not making it up! That classmate of hers was a guy and mom said he had a lot of pimples on his face but they seemed normal until one day when he got one huge pimple on his forehead, near his eye. Semua orang tegur dia about his huge pimple and that night he poked his pimple and well.... he died. I can't remember the exact detail of the story but he died because bacteria/germs from the pimple that was infected masuk dalam otak dia or something like that (and because of that, my mom always tell me not to poke pimples yang kat area mata ke atas sebab bahaya, dekat dengan otak). Shocking right?? I mean, it was just a pimple! Nauzubillah. Of course the chances of this are very little, but it just shows that life is unpredictable. Anything can happen.

"You and your partner may be perfectly healthy now, but who knows what the future will bring? Tomorrow, you could find a lump on your chest or a spot on your back. Why sacrifice your freedom to see the doctor you want just to save $20 a month? It's simply not worth it. Eat out one less time a month or cancel those premium channels on your TV cable, and you've covered the cost of going with the most expensive health-care option that has the most flexibility." - excerpt from Smart Couples Finish Rich.

My husband and I realized that it's important for our children to have insurance as well. There's no such thing as too young to have insurance! In fact the earlier you sign up for insurance the better.

We signed up for PRUmy child for both our kids when I was pregnant with Raina. And I'm glad we made that choice because it gives us a peace of mind as it secures our children's future with complete protection as well as education plans.

Our health is our most valuable asset and we never know what would happen in the future, so it's only wise to have it insured. It's always better to prepare yourself for the uncertainty, no? Ignorance is not always bliss!

MIX fm wants to hear from you

Hey, did you know about the MIX fm Radio Tune-Up survey that is currently running?

Basically the survey is to help MIX fm improve what it does, says and plays so that it can serve its listeners better. It's your chance to tell them what exactly do you want from MIX fm - it could be about the music, DJs, daily shows, contests, prizes, whatever. And get this, when you take part in the survey, you could stand a chance to win the cool iPhone 4!

Hello, beautiful. Would you be mine?

I love answering survey questions if they are close-ended. Just tick, tick and tick! Easy-peasy.

There are a few open-ended questions too. It's pretty simple altho I had no idea how to answer this question: "What do you think is missing on breakfast radio shows in Malaysia?".

I answered "Food" ;p
No seriously, I answered food! I am so lame.

To be honest, I rarely listen to the radio so I don't really know what's on breakfast radio shows except for the prank calls (love that!), the traffic updates and umm... songs. I don't even know the current popular songs! You know, the first page of the MIX fm survey is a list of songs where you have to rate according to your favorite and I only know about 30% of it!

I think I need to listen to the radio more often now. I don't know how many times I caught myself humming Five Little Ducks, Head Shoulder Knees And Toes, Alif Baa Taa and ABC songs while I'm doing housework; heck even when I'm in the shower! And then when I realized I was humming those songs I'd go like, "Why am I humming this song??". So not cool!

Well the thing about humming songs is that, you always hum the songs that you listen to the most or songs that you last heard. In my case, it's always nursery rhymes! I sing nursery rhymes to my kids like all the time, especially Ayra because she's in that stage where she likes to dance and sing. Don't get me wrong, I enjoy singing to my kids but I don't like it when the songs get stuck in my head for days! I need to listen to my songs! I need to listen to the radio!

I was delighted to find out there's MIX fm app on iPhone. I downloaded it right away.

And I like it already because they play songs from the 90s!!!

Ok, now go take the survey at http://www.mix.fm/special/tuneup/

The Next Faces of babyGap

You know how those fashion magazines always come up with the "one dress, a few ways" kind of thing?

Well here's my version for little girls - 1 dress, 3 ways.

Black dress from babyGap.

Worn as a tunic with stripe leggings from babyGap.

Worn with a cropped cardigan from babyGap.

Worn over a pink long sleeve top and the cutest pair of pink ballet flats, also from babyGap!

babyGap is my most favorite brand for babies because they make chic and trendy clothing for little fashionistas! Usually when it comes to dressing up my girls, I'd opt for anything with bright colors and cute prints to tell everyone that my baby is a GIRL (but sometimes people would still ask "Boy or girl?" even when my baby is wearing floral. Gahhh!!)

Raina in babyGap clothing

Just recently, I went to babyGap store and fell in love with their latest collection which featured lots of blacks, whites and reds. That little black dress that Ayra wore is from one of the collections (if I'm not mistaken, Parisian Chic). I also bought a black asymmetrical tiered dress for Raina. No girl is too young for an LBD! ;p

The white cropped cardigan is also from babyGap.

But my most favorite purchase from babyGap's latest collection is a pink tiered tulle skirt which I bought for Ayra (I wanted the red one but they ran out of size). I've secretly wanted to wear a tutu skirt when I was little but since I didn't get to wear one, kasi my daughters jer la pakai. I'm gonna buy a pink tutu crawler for Raina to match with her sister. Too cute!

Kids nowadays are so lucky, aren't they? Baju semua cantik-cantik! I can spend hours in the shop, belek-belek all the clothes.

Of course Ayra would join me too. She loves checking out the stuff (especially shoes) and sometimes she'd pick something from the rack of clothes herself...

...like this grey skinny jeans.

Heck, she was even "featured" on the window display during babyGap sale at The Gardens mall a few months ago! ;p

Speaking of window display, GUESS WHAT?

Gap is going to have a Casting Call event to find the next faces of babyGap and GapKids for Spring 2011 collection! The Gap Casting Call is a nationwide contest which is held annually in the North America but this year they have decided to spread their wings to Malaysia, Singapore and Indonesia. So this is your chance to have your child featured on the window displays across all stores in those three countries! Isn't that exciting?!

Now if you're interested to participate, spend RM170 and above at any babyGap or GapKids stores in Malaysia whether at The Gardens, Pavilion, KLCC or One Utama from 28th November to 12th December 2010 and get your child's photo taken at Gap's in-store photo booths which will be set up at these venues:

GapKids at The Gardens (Level 2)
4th & 5th December
11am - 6pm

GapKids at One Utama (Level 2)
11th & 12th December
11am - 6pm

Children aged between 0 months to 10 years old can participate in this contest. You must show the original copy of the receipt to enter this contest so don't throw away the receipt!

Anyway, all pictures taken during both events will be uploaded on Gap Malaysia Facebook page and you can even vote for your favorite pictures online! Public voting will start from 4th until 31st December 2010, and the result will be announced in Feb 2011. The prizes are really awesome - besides being featured on the Spring 2011 window displays of all babyGap and GapKids stores in all three countries, Malaysian winners will also receive RM2,000 Gap gift card each! Can get loadsss of Gap stuff - I want!!!

Milk For Mommies

I'm a sucker for free samples. Skincare, hair care, perfumes, baby stuff, food, drinks, anything! I like to try new things so samples are a great way to try a product.

A couple of months ago when I went for my postnatal check-up, I saw a basket filled with milk samples for pregnant and nursing moms at the hospital's registration counter. I breastfeed my baby exclusively and at that time I was consuming Wyeth Mama milk but I wanted to try a few other brands as well, so I grabbed a few samples to try it at home. Well, I didn't like it. Not even the chocolate flavoured ones.

You see, breastfeeding makes me hungry like ALL the time and I usually prefer to snack on warm drinks mixed with oats especially in the middle of the night while pumping my milk.

When I found out that Friso has come out with a new milk for pregnant and nursing moms called Friso Mum Gold, I immediately want to give it a try. It's the only maternal milk that contains Prebiotic and Probiotic.

In case you don't know, Probiotics are good bacterias that "guard" the digestive systems from bad bacterias to keep us healthy and it also helps to relieve constipation, as well as preventing allergic reactions in newborns.

Prebiotics however, are food for the good bacteria to help them grow and it also helps our body to absorb calcium easily.

I was quite surprised to find out that Friso Mum Gold contains a lot of nutrients compared to other maternal milk. It contains DHA, AA, SA, folic acid, iron and calcium, just what every pregnant and nursing mom needs!

And then I found out that you can actually request a sample of the milk from Friso website (just sign up as a member), so I requested for it.

I can't wait to try the new Friso Mum! And I hope I can continue to breastfeed Raina until she's 2 years old, Insyaallah.
